"Cindy Sherman created Untitled Film Stills between 1977 and 1980 which was her inaugural work. The series comprises 69 self-portraits which are meticulously composed like the B movies of the fifties. The artist plays the role of many female personalities, including solitary heroines from films that were never released." (www.images.ch)

"She avoided putting titles on the images to preserve their ambiguity ... they are all 8-1/2 by 11 inches, each displayed in identical, simple black frames."

"Through a number of different series of works, Sherman has sought to raise challenging and important questions about the role and representation of women in society, the media and the nature of the creation of art."
