"During his second visit to Paris (May 1901-January 1902), Picasso worked in many styles. This painting captures the heavily powdered face of a nighttime habitué of Montmartre in bright electric light, a novelty at the time. The patches of green and black at the upper left are part of an elaborate headdress, visible in the related drawing 'Au Moulin Rouge' (1901; private collection)."
